I studied painting drawing and sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London.
The depiction of people relative to their environment has always been an aspect of my work, and the tall buildings and straight lines of the city was quite a contrast to the rounded granite hills which overlooked the curved bay of the Irish sea where I had grown up. In Ayrshire we are always aware of the huge volume of sky, patchwork of fields on rolling hills and an intricate coast line.
At Glasgow Print Studio I have experimented with varied forms of print media and use mixed print making methods in my work; from a combination of etching with carborundum grit, to collographs, just using carborundum, and using silkscreen techniques. The themes of my work continued to develop around the shapes of places and spaces people find themselves in and awareness of volume and light.
When engaged to produce a body of work for the national Trust at Alloa Tower to capture the the subtle play of light I made cyanotypes, a process which I have subsequently combined with silk screen printing.
Situations that have most affected my perception and benefited my work would be through experiencing different cultures especially seeing the vibrant use of colour when travelling in China, India, and South America, the Residency at Vermont studio centre, a studio exchange with an artist in Berlin, and participation at Kircudbright International Art Festivals.
More recently Master classes with fused glass at North Lands Creative glass in Caithness has brought a new impetus to my work.
I have exhibited my work widely and have work in public and private collections in Scotland, England, Wales, France, USA and New Zealand.
